Getting started in High School Sailing

Sailing is now a club sport opportunity for all Portland area high school students! Enrollment is open to students of all Portland area high schools, private as well as public, but limited to 30 students. Previous sailing experience is not required, but participants must be able to swim, commit to regular practices, and provide their own life jackets and cold weather clothing. Parents are expected to share in the volunteer duties at weekly practices or weekend regattas. The 2008 program will have two sessions:

  • Fall: 10 weeks starting Sept. 2, 2008. Practice times are Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4-6 pm, for doublehanded crews and Sundays, 11:30 am-12:30 pm, for Lasers.

  • Spring: 15 weeks starting Feb. 23, 2009. Practice times are Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, 4-6:30 pm.

In addition to weekday practice on the Willamette River, we compete with other high school teams from throughout the Northwest at weekend regattas. Boats (double-handed Club 420s and single-handed Lasers) and US Sailing-certified coaching are provided by the Willamette Sailing Club.
