Getting started in High School Sailing

Sailing is now a club sport opportunity for Portland area high school students! Enrollment is open to students attending any Portland/Vancouver area high school, private as well as public, but limited to 30 students. Previous sailing experience is not required, although students with no previous sailing experience will be required to take a beginning sailing course. All participants must be able to swim, commit to regular practices, and provide their own life jackets and appropriate sailing clothing. Parents are expected to share in the volunteer duties at weekly practices or weekend regattas. The 2010-11 program will have two sessions:

  • Fall: Starts Sept. 13 for new sailors and Sept. 27 for returning sailors. Practice times for 420s are Mondays and Wednesdays, 4-6:30 pm (moves to 6 pm Nov. 1) and for Lasers Sundays, 10:30 am-12:30 pm. Ends Nov. 21.

  • Spring: Starts Feb. 14, 2011. Practice times
are Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, 4-6 pm (moves to 6:30 pm Mar. 14). Ends June 3.

In addition to weekday practice on the Willamette River, we compete with other high school teams from throughout the Northwest at weekend regattas. Boats (double-handed Club 420s and single-handed Lasers) and US Sailing-certified coaching are provided by the Willamette Sailing Club.

Coaches

We are extremely fortunate to have two of the very best coaches available in the Northwest! Meet Bill Symes and Kyle Eaton.
