Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to own a boat to belong to WSC?
Yes, "Regular" members must own a boat to join WSC.
Does WSC have boats to "check-out" to members or rent?
The Willamette Sailing Club does not have boats for members to use on their own or to rent to the public. The club owns a fleet of Lasers, Optis, and 420's for the use of our Willamette Sailing School and the youth programs. You can use club boats if you take a sailing class. The club boats are occasionally used for special events, like team racing and the club championship regatta.
Do I need to know how to sail to join?
No, WSC has members with all ranges of sailing experience and knowledge. Many of the Willamette Sailing School student's join the club after one sailing lesson. In addition, the sailing school gives a discount to WSC members taking classes, therefore we have also had members join and then take their first sailing class.
Can I still join if I am not interested in racing?
Yes, by all means. Probably only about 40-50% of the club membership actively race. WSC provides a great opportunity to keep your boat on the water, and quickly get out for an evening or weekend sail.
What kinds of social events does the club hold?
The club holds numerous social events each year including a Commodore's Ball, Awards Banquet, Opening Day, and many other events and parties at the sailing club
How much does it cost to join?
The initiation fee is $400 (for younger membership categories such as Midshipman and Youth the initiation fee is structured differently or waived). Annual dues are $380 a year. The WSC facility is maintained by its members. Each membership is responsible for 10 work hours around the club, which can be paid off at $25/hour if preferred. We encourage members to come down and do their work hours as this is an opportunity to socialize as well. Two work hours can be done by race committee duty. If you would like to keep your boat at WSC, the following apply: pull-out dock moorage is $50/month, Lot moorage is $40/month (or $60 for boats over 18 feet), and Laser Rack dock moorage is $20/month.
How is WSC structured?
WSC is member owned, operated, and maintained. The club is structured as a non-profit social club, run by a volunteer Board of Directors elected each year from within the membership.
