Youth Sailing Classes
|
Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced Youth Classes & Camps are available through the Willamette Sailing School. All classes are taught in a fun, safe and encouraging environment by well trained, U.S. Sailing certified instructors. Beginner. This class is held in both Optimist Dinghies (for children 120 lb and under, ages 8-12) and two-person 15-foot Club 420's (for children over 120 lb, ages 13-18). The class teaches the basics of rigging and sailing in a fun and safe environment for all new sailors. This class should be taken at least two times, with some sailing during the year. There are a lot of new ideas being taught in this class which make two classes a good idea before advancement. Intermediate. This class is also in both boats. After reviewing the basics of boat handling kids will move on to sailing all of the points of sail. They will learn the best way to move the boat from a point upwind, closely round a mark without losing control of the boat and jibe down wind. This will be tough with games as well as sailing drills which will help prepare them for a youth sailing program. Advanced. This class is held in both Optimist Dinghies (for children 120 lb and under, ages 8-12) and two-person 15-foot Club 420's (for children over 120 lb, ages 13-18). This class expands on the knowledge and skills learned in the Beginner and intermediate courses. In order to participate in the advanced class, children must have successfully completed all beginning classes and have had previous sailing experience. They can successfully sail upwind, down wind, tack, and jibe. We will start talking more about tactics and sail trim. Introduction to Racing. This class will teach the different racing courses, flags that are used to mark the course. The start flag signals. rules of the race. And then basic strategy. Pirate Party. A special event, August 16, 4 to 8 p.m. An end-of-season party for all sailing school students. Ask your instructor for more information. Class Prices: $180 if you are not currently a WSC member (this includes the "Training Membership" fee) and $90 if you are a WSC Member (Regular or Youth)
